The museum hosts Hands On Days several times a year. Suitable for both adults and children, Hands On Days feature a variety of educational activities involving train modeling and history.
Mini-workshops on railroad modeling are led by local experts who demonstrate techniques with track layouts, scenery design, scenery building, structure painting and techniques for creating historically accurate designs. While using HO scale trains, the discussions and techniques are applicable to all scales. Visitors are encouraged to bring questions about their own projects.
Other activities focus on artifact restoration and preservation. Participants learn how the museum restores and protects its display pieces, many of them well over a century old. It's a great way to learn about the history of railroads in Fairfax County.
Materials for Hands On Day activities are included in the price of admission.
